ECS is an independent graphic design studio driven by typography.

Typography is at work in everything humans do. It’s the medium through which we leave everything we had to say. And it is the vehicle through which companies and entities express themselves.

That’s why typography is the dominant driver of our creative approach, and the through-line of 25 years of design work—including brand identity, visual systems, products, spaces, and publications.

The Letter Office is our merch label, with original apparel and household goods that feature a bold political voice. Portions of all proceeds are donated to various charities for related causes.

Elizabeth Carey Smith is the founder and creative director of ECS Studio. She also teaches brand identity and typography at Parsons, and has taught at SVA and Cooper Union. She is President Emeritus of the Type Directors Club and gives talks about typography and visual culture on stages around the world. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
